TREAT 1

Dave Van Ronk was the first blues musician I attached to and from him I got to Lightnin
Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake,  and all the rest. I met him in his last years
and got to tell him that what he had done musically mattered.
"Duncan and Brady" was the first of his songs that I heard. It's based on an incident that
happened in St. Louis in 1897. The poetry of the ballad still gets me and I've included them
below.
Duncan and Brady
                                 Duncan and Brady
                                    (Traditional)

Well, it’s twinkle, twinkle, little star
Well, along come Brady in his ‘lectric car
Well, he’s got a mean look right in his eye
Gonna shoot somebody just to see him die
Well, he’d been on the job too long.

Well, Duncan, Duncan was tending the bar
Well, along come Brady with his shiny star
Well, Brady says: “Duncan, you’re under arrest.”
Duncan shot a hole right in Brady’s chest
Yes, he’d been on the job too long.

Well, it’s Brady, Brady, Brady, well you know you done wrong
Well, breaking in here while my game’s going on
Well, breaking down the windows, knocking down the door
Now you’re lying dead on the barroom floor
Yes, you’ve been on the job too long.

Well, old King Brady was a big fat man.
Well, the doctor reached out, grabbed hold of his hand
Well, he felt for his pulse, doctor said:
“I believe to my soul King Brady’s dead.”
Yes, he’d been on the job too long.

Well, hard-tailed carriages was standing around
Waiting to take King Brady to the burying ground
Well, hard-tailed carriages, rubber-tired hacks
Well, they took him to the graveyard but they didn’t bring him back
Yes, he’d been on the job too long.

Well, the women all heard King Brady was dead
Well, they go back home and they re-rag in red
Come a-slipping and a-sliding and a-shuffling down the street
In their big Mother Hubbards and their stocking feet
He’d been on the job too long.

Well, Brady, Brady, well you know you done wrong
Well, breaking in here while my game’s going on
Well, breaking down the windows, knocking down the door
And now you’re lying dead on the barroom floor
Yes, you’ve been the job too long.
